Summer: the ideal time to discover Geneva?

Even if Geneva is beautiful in all seasons, it is during the summer that I prefer to stroll through the shady streets of the old town, to sip a drink on one of the many terraces or to cool off by taking a dip in the nearby lake.

And if the heat is too much, you can go to the Salève, a small summit overlooking the city, which can be reached in a few minutes, or go to Chamonix, the famous resort of Haute-Savoie, where you can get close to the mythical Mont-Blanc, at an altitude of nearly 4,000 metres.

A swimming pool of almost 600 km2

I have already mentioned that Lake Geneva is the largest Alpine lake in Europe. But it also has many beaches - nearly 120 - of which about thirty are located in the canton of Geneva.

Whether you prefer an intimate spot or a large public beach, whether it's pebble, sand or grass, this interactive map will help you find what you're looking for!

Many activities are possible on the lake: pedal boats, paddle boats, canoes or wakeboards, there is something for everyone. And of course swimming. The record for crossing Lake Geneva in its entire length: 75 km in less than 20 hours, achieved in 2021 by the Vaud swimmer Noam Yaron.

140 metres of refreshing water

Is it too hot? Then take the pier that approaches the base of Geneva's water jet. Emblematic of the city since 1891 - and the main tourist attraction - it expels water at more than 200 km/hour, reaching a height of 140 metres.

And to think that at the beginning it was only a safety valve, allowing the overpressure of the network to be expelled 30 metres high...

Geneva Transport Card

Founded in 1897, the Mouettes genevoises offer four lake lines operating all year round since 2004. These shuttle boats leave every 10 minutes and offer an original way of getting around.

The Geneva Transport Card, given to you when you check in, offers free use of all public transport in Geneva (bus, tram, but also for the Geneva Seagulls).

Crossing the harbour in seagulls

Seagulls are small yellow water taxis that are particularly useful for getting around Geneva quickly. Four round-trip lines link the two shores of Lake Geneva throughout the year.

A fast and efficient way to cross Lake Geneva, these small taxi-boats, operated by a company founded in 1897, are the pride of the people of Geneva.

When the waters of a Swiss glacier meet those of a French glacier

La Jonction is the name of a district of Geneva. It is also a place unique where one can witness, in the city, the impressive meeting of the green waters of the Rhone River - which originates in Switzerland, in the Rhone glacier - with the grey waters of the Arve River, a river of the Alps which originates in the Mont Blanc massif.

This wedding presents a spectacular palette of colours: the deep blue of the Rhône confronts and mixes with the sandy beige of the Arve. Don't miss: canoeing or rafting down the Arve

Concerts galore

Do you like music? You're in for a treat. During the summer, a multitude of concerts are offered in Geneva itself, and in the rest of the canton:
Plein-les-Watts Festival in Lancy, Les Aubes on the Bains des Pâquis jetty (just a stone's throw from the hotel), Musiques en Été at La Grange park in Geneva, Pregny Alp Festival, Jazz sur la Plage in Hermance, there is no shortage of choice.

Geneva, an open-air playground

When you book at the Hotel Bristol from 1 July to 31 August, you will receive your free Geneva Resort Pass, allowing you to enjoy over 100 free or discounted activities.

The Alps in focus

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (or Cham' for the initiated) is only an hour's drive from Geneva.

The tourist attraction of Mont Blanc - the highest peak in the Alps at 4,810 metres - gives the city a very cosmopolitan face. There is also the Mer de Glace, the largest glacier in France (7 km long and 200 m thick).

The commune is very popular with mountaineers and mountain sports enthusiasts in general.

I also went up to the Aiguille du Midi by cable car, an incredible adventure that I will tell you about very soon. In the middle of summer, I was able to enjoy the sun and an incredible view, with temperatures below 25°!

Combining the effervescence of an international city, the charm of a lakeside town, the immediate proximity of the Alps and the high mountains, this is certainly what makes Geneva so charming.
