House Tavel

The Maison Tavel, destroyed by fire in 1334 and subsequently rebuilt, adopts the style of a fortified house with turrets and an ornate facade. Transformed over the centuries, notably by the Calandrini family in the 17th and early 18th centuries, it was acquired by the City of Geneva in 1963 and restored. Excavations in 1979 revealed an 11th-century tower and a 17th-century cistern. Since 1986, it has housed the Musée d'histoire urbaine et de la vie quotidienne, exhibiting objects illustrating Geneva's past from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.
